Rowland Hilder OBE(1905-1993)
Rowland Hilder was a landscape painter in the classic English tradition. Though born in New York, Hilder, at the age of ten, returned with his parents to live in his father’s native county of Kent. It was here that a devotion to drawing and painting the English landscape began which would last for the next 70 years and stand as a record of the ever-diminishing ‘garden of England’.
He studied illustration and printmaking at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art under Edmund Sullivan where he was later to lecture and also at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, Royal College of Art and Farnham School of Art.
His commercial success was initially through illustration for which he was commissioned by Oxford University Press one example being his 1929 monochrome drawings for Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’ for which he won Times Illustrator Award.
His long relationship with Shell Mex Ltd resulted in a series of travel guides and posters
